Boat Shed Construction in Sydney

Boat sheds

A boat shed is a covered structure right on the water’s edge, and every owner uses theirs differently. For some it’s a working boat shed that keeps the boat, kayaks and gear out of the sun, rain and salt spray, often with a slipway or cradle so the boat can go straight in and out of the water. Others turn theirs into a waterfront retreat with a deck, kitchenette and lounge, a place to entertain friends or just sit back and watch the tide come in.

Whatever you have in mind, we manage the whole project across the Port Hacking River, the Georges River, Sydney Harbour and the South Coast. We do the marine works ourselves and the boat shed itself is built by the specialist builder we partner with, so you deal with one crew from first site visit to finished boat shed, designed to suit how you want to use yours and built to last in harsh marine conditions.

Who builds our boat sheds

We’re marine contractors, not builders, and we’re upfront about that. We manage the whole project for you from start to finish, and we handle everything the boat shed stands on and everything that connects it to your property. That includes bringing in the materials for the boat shed build, installing the piles it stands on from our own vessels, building the deck and structure over the water, and the jetty or ramp access back to shore.

The boat shed itself is built by the specialist builder we partner with regularly. We run the project around them, so you have one point of contact the whole way through and a builder who already knows how we work. It runs as one job, not two trades working out who gets on site and when.

Do you need approval for a boat shed?

For a new one, yes, and boat sheds attract more scrutiny than most waterfront structures because of their size and visual impact. That is worth knowing before you plan around a date. We coordinate the development application with our specialist in-house marine town planner.

If you are rebuilding a boat shed that is already there and keeping the same footprint, it generally comes under repairs and maintenance instead, which is a much simpler path. Plenty of the old boat sheds around Port Hacking River are tired but sitting on foundations worth keeping, or the reverse: a sound boat shed on failing piles. We look at both halves before anyone talks about a rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you build the boat shed itself?

We build everything the boat shed sits on and everything that gets material to it: piles, decking, jetty and slipway access, and the supply transport by water. The boat shed itself is built by the specialist builder we partner with. We manage the whole process for you, so it runs as one job rather than two.

Why involve a waterfront builder in a boat shed project?

Access. Boat shed sites are usually steep, tight or water-access-only, and the thing that holds these jobs up is almost always getting materials and plant to the site. Because we work these waterways daily and have our own vessels, supply transport stops being the bottleneck and the whole build moves faster.

Can you rebuild or repair an existing boat shed?

Often, yes. Plenty of the old boat sheds around Port Hacking River are structurally tired but sitting on foundations worth keeping, or the reverse: a sound boat shed on failing piles. We inspect both halves and give you an honest read on what is worth saving before anyone talks about a rebuild.

Simple from the start

How It Works

  1. Talk through the boat shed

What you want to store, how you get to it, and what your foreshore will allow.

  2. Marine works and approvals

Piles, deck and access sorted first, with the approvals path mapped out alongside.

  3. The boat shed goes up

Our partner builder takes it from there, with us managing the job and running supply by water.
