Marine Pile Driving in Sydney

Piling

Every waterfront structure is only as strong as the piles beneath it. They carry the load, take the knocks from boats and weather, and keep everything standing straight against the tide.

We drive piles from our own floating barge, fitted with an excavator and drill rig, so there’s no heavy machinery across your property. We work across the Port Hacking River, the Georges River, Sydney Harbour and the South Coast, and install concrete-filled HDPE, timber and steel piles for:

From a single replacement pile to a full new foundation, we’ll get it done.

Which pile type will your job need?

Usually not your call. The engineer specifies the pile based on the regulations that apply to your site, the loads the structure has to carry, and what the bed is made of. Three types cover most of the work we do:

  • Timber, turpentine or treated hardwood, where the rules require a natural product, which is the case in parts of Sydney Harbour
  • HDPE with a concrete core, the most common choice on residential jobs because it is the most cost-effective and has the best longevity
  • Steel inside an HDPE sleeve, the strongest and the most expensive, specified for big boats and big structures

How marine piles are driven from a barge

We assess the bed, set out to the approved design, drive each pile to its required embedment and trim to level. Depth depends entirely on what is down there, because sand, mud, clay and rock all behave differently. Piles go in until they reach the engineered embedment or hit refusal on rock, commonly several metres below the bed, and the rig lets us verify the set as we drive.

Working from the water means accurate positioning on tight residential frontages, with no crane on the lawn and no gear coming through the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is marine pile driving used for?

Piles are the foundations of nearly every waterfront structure: jetties, pontoon guide piles, boat lifts, wave screens, seawall footings and vessel moorings. Driving them from a barge lets us work accurately over water in places land-based machinery cannot reach.

What types of piles do you install: timber, concrete or steel?

All three, and the choice is usually made for you: the engineer specifies the pile type based on the regulations for your site and the loads involved. Timber piling is used where the finish has to stay natural, such as harbour foreshores. An HDPE sleeve with a concrete core covers most residential work, because it is the most cost-effective and has the longest life. Steel piles inside an HDPE sleeve are the strongest option, and priced accordingly.

How deep are marine piles driven?

It depends entirely on the bed and the load. Sand, mud, clay and rock all behave differently. Piles are driven until they reach the engineered embedment or hit refusal on rock, commonly several metres below the bed. Our rig lets us verify the set as we drive.

Do you do pile driving for both residential and commercial jobs?

Yes. Alongside residential jetty and pontoon piles we take on commercial work: berths, moorings and structural piling for marinas, clubs and builders, anywhere our barge can reach across the Port Hacking River, the Georges River, Sydney Harbour and the South Coast.

Simple from the start

How It Works

  1. Send us the job

Engineering drawings if you have them, or we can help arrange the design.

  2. Barge sets up on site

We position from the water, so there is no crane on the lawn and no access drama.

  3. Driven, verified, trimmed

Each pile driven to its engineered set and trimmed to level, ready to build on.
